Sunseeker to set up shop in Southampton?
September 2, 2014 by admin
If shipbuilding returns to Southampton, after BAE Systems’ recent departure from neighbouring Portsmouth, and the last shipbuilders in S’ton relocated to Pompey over 10 years ago, many would say this was ironic. And yet it’s exactly that situation which could be likely for the city’s Centenary Quay development.
The project is currently full steam ahead with new homes, restaurants and planning permission for three large buildings in an adjacent plot. Work got underway in 2010, with some building work starting. Super yacht giant Palmer Johnson were also tipped for moving onto the 3.49 hectare vacant area, unfortunately this deal fell through in the wake of the global economic crisis. Iit’s now being rumoured that Sunseeker bosses have looked at the site.
Currently there’s no further update from the Poole based yacht firm but Labour city council leader Simon Letts recently told the Southampton Daily Echo he and colleagues would do anything they could to bring Sunseeker to Southampton.
Only time will tell if this move becomes a reality. Should Sunseeker set up shop in Southampton assurances have been given their Poole business wouldn’t be affected.
