BAE Systems secure £270m contract

Having taken a pounding of late Portsmouth’s maritime and boat building industry received some much needed good news today. A 3270m contract to build Royal Navy torpedoes has been secured which will guarantee 100 new jobs.

The MOD has struck a £70m deal that safeguards 100 Portsmouth shipbuilding jobs with BAE Systems. After months of turmoil and uncertainty about the cities future within the industry this is good news and will see a two year contract round off construction of six new Type 45 destroyers.

Further calls for BAE Systems to halt redundancies

Union leaders are calling for the spate of redundancies at Portsmouth’s shipbuilding facility to be put on hold until after Scottland’s independence referendum. Although 940 jobs were confirmed as being axed last November, Michael Fallon has been put under pressure to encourage BAE Systems to wait until after September and the future use of the shipbuilding facility has been decided.

Reported at least seven companies have approached officials in the last few days – some of whom are interested in building whole ships in Portsmouth.
